Epic Games, the popular video game creator has taken Google to court and starts its legal battle in San Francisco. Epic Games claims that Google abandoned their ethos.
Epic Games beings its legal battle with Google in San Francisco claiming that Google was abandoning the "Don't be Evil" ethos that it had developed at its founding in 1998.The company charged that Google was operating like a monopoly by taking a 30% commission on in-app purchases made through the Google Play store.
Google countered that there were other alternative methods for downloading software for Android phones.
The business has consistently denied any monopoly status for Google Play and stated that it competes with Apple. Another antitrust front against Google is made visible by the trial. The US Justice Department has accused the firm of having an illegal monopoly over search, and the company is defending itself in a Washington court.
Epic's arguments are familiar if they sound that way. A very similar action was brought to court by Epic against Apple in 2021.
Fortnite was removed from Google Play and the App Store by the corporation in 2020, citing the fees as "taxes" on developers. In that instance, the judge dismissed the notion that Apple constituted a monopoly but permitted applications to direct users away from Apple's in-app purchases.
Google has, according to Epic, "eliminated competition in the distribution of Android apps using myriad contractual and technical barriers." Google counters that there is more rivalry in the app store than on any other operating system.
