Alec Baldwin fires prop gun on the sets of new film, fatally injures a woman

Actor-Producer Alec Baldwin fatally shoots the cinematographer and injures the director accidentally while firing a prop firearm on the set of new film 'Rust'.

Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun on the movie set of his new film in an accident that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, while director Joel Souza was also injured. The Santa Fe Sheriff’s office said Baldwin, acting as the lead and producing the film ‘Rust,’ had fired the prop gun in an incident on Thursday.

The statement also said officers were dispatched to the set around 2 pm in Bonanza Creek Ranch when a caller reported the shooting to 911. The Sheriff’s office confirmed that two individuals were shot on the set of ‘Rust.’ 42-year-old Halyna Hutchins, the director of photography, and 48-year-old Joel Souza, the director, were shot by prop firearm discharged by 68-year-old producer and actor Alec Baldwin.

The Sheriff’s office noted Ms. Hutchins was airlifted via helicopter to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where she was pronounced dead by the doctors. Mr. Souza was taken to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical center, undergoing treatment for his injuries.

Production has been stopped on the movie. The film was going to shoot until early November according the New Mexico Film Office press release.
