Following the Uncharted movie’s solid opening weekend, Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group CEO and Chairman Tom Rothman announced Uncharted as a new hit movie franchise for the firm.
After years of attempting to adapt Naughty Dog’s award-winning video game series to the silver screen, viewers finally got a chance to see Nathan Drake on the big screen. Uncharted stars Tom Holland as a younger version of Nathan Drake compared to the games. He’s paired up with Mark Wahlberg playing the role of Sully and Sophia Ali as Chloe Frazer for a globe-trotting adventure on the back of a treasure hunt.
As reported by Deadline, Rothman called the movie a new hit franchise in a companywide e-mail following Uncharted’s $139 million worldwide opening weekend’s box office performance. The box office collection was more than enough to cover the film’s production budget, and it has Sony wanting to make a potential sequel, although nothing has yet been confirmed.
This is certainly a welcome outcome for the Uncharted movie, which had to pass through development hell on its way to the finish line. Domestically, the film was expected to do around $30 million, but it has so far recorded $51 million.
