Qualcomm has been one of the leading solutions in chipsets, 5G modems as well as fast charging solution. From its first Quick Charge technology in 2013, it has come up a long way to release its latest and greatest “Quick charge 5” with 100W+ charging. It can charge a phone with a 4500mAh battery from 0 to 50% in just 5minutes, while a full charge will take 15 minutes. It is a huge jump from Quick charge 4, announced in 2017which provided standard quick charge of just 18W.
Qualcomm Quick Charge 5 will support output voltages between 3.3 and 20 Volts at minimum, with 3.3 or 5 Amps of current or 5+ Amps.According to Qualcomm, it is much safer than the plain power delivery as it features 8 levels of voltage protection, 3 levels of current protection, 3 levels of thermal protection, and 3 timer protection, plus overvoltage protection at 25 V. The charging solution promises to keep the device cool by distributing the battery into two or even three.
Qualcomm has unveiled two charge controller chips that manufacturers can use – SMB1396 and MSB1398. Unlike the recent charging solutions from Oppo, Realme, etc this is a standard solution that every OEM using a Snapdragon Chipset can use. We can see the flagship devices coming next year with this charging tech as a standard feature.
“Quick Charge 5, our fastest and most versatile charging solution, will enable consumers to enjoy their devices for longer periods of time, without worrying about the time required to recharge. We are proud to expand our technology portfolio and make accessible 100W+ charging a commercial reality,” EV Roach, VP Product Management, Qualcomm Technologies, said in a statement.
