Oracle is offering free AI training to up to 10,000 Singapore professionals and students over three years, as part of its 36-year engagement with the nation. This initiative is expected to significantly boost Singapore's goal to increase the number of AI practitioners to 15,000 over the next five years. As stated in Singapore's updated AI plan, which was unveiled in December 2023, this level of labor is required to take advantage of the new prospects brought forth by generative AI technologies.
Oracle CEO Safra Catz, 61, stated that one of their top priorities is education in a rare and exclusive interview with The Straits Times. Catz is in Singapore to meet with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, customers, and other local officials. She cited Oracle's history of educational investment and mentioned that the company operates a public high school on its Redwood City, California, campus, a first for the industry's largest tech companies, many of which have instead integrated computer education and products into regular classrooms. The US$43 million (S$58 million) Design Tech High School opened its doors in 2018 on the Oracle campus. Students can earn internships at the company and receive staff mentoring. Classes on subjects like robotics and wearables are also offered to students.
