Walmart announced that it will expand its Online Grocery Delivery service to over 100 metro areas across the US this year. Currently, the service is available in six markets and this ambitious announcement takes it directly on Amazon in competition.
The announcement also said that Walmart’s Online Grocery Pickup service, which is available in 1,200 stores as of now, will reach 1,000 additional stores throughout 2018. Walmart also said that the delivery expansion service will be able to reach and cover nearly 40 percent of US households.
“Ninety percent of Americans live within 10 miles of a Walmart store, and we serve more than 150 million customers a week, which gives us a unique opportunity to make every day a little easier for busy families,” said Tom Ward, Walmart's VP of digital operations in a statement.
Taking on Amazon
Amazon and Walmart have been at each other’s back. Both the companies have been trying out new and different things to attract customers with cheap and fast services. Over the years, we saw automated grocery stores and other tech-driven services. While Amazon explored drive-up, Walmart brought out employees deliver your packages on their way home from work. And not to forget the meal kits that both the retail giants are offering now.
