U.S memory chip makers Micron technology to build 800 billion DRAM plant in Hiroshima prefecture in Western Japan.
U.S-based memory chip and data storage device maker Micron Technology Inc. will build a new factory at its Japanese production site in Hiroshima at the cost of 800 billion yen ($6.98 billion). The new facility will produce DRAM chips, among many other things.
The largest maker of memory chips in the U.S., Micron Technology Inc., will purchase land near existing facilities in Higashihiroshima, a university town in the Hiroshima prefecture of Western Japan. The plant is expected to cost between 600 billion to 800 billion yen, and the Japanese government is reported to provide some subsidies to facilitate the plant.
In June, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry said it would treat growth in the semiconductor industry as a “national project” amid a global shortage in semiconductor chips and concerns the nation has lost its edge in the field.
Micron’s new plant will begin operations by 2024 and will serve to meet medium-to-long term demand for DRAMs at data centers and in other applications. The facility is expected to create around 2,000 to 3,000 new jobs, including those at business partners.
