Officials stated the pilot asked for tugboat assistance after losing power just before the collision with the Baltimore Bridge.
The head of the National Transportation Safety Board said that because the Francis Scott Key Bridge, constructed in 1976, does not have modern safety features, it is at a higher risk of collapsing. The Singaporean container ship Dali lost power and hit a bridge support pylon a day after leaving Baltimore Harbor for Sri Lanka. New details about the fatal incident have emerged.
Most of the bridge collapsed into the Patapsco River almost immediately after the impact. This blocked shipping routes and led to the permanent shutdown of the Port of Baltimore, a major port on the U.S. East Coast. Officials reported that divers found two of the six missing workers on Wednesday after the bridge collapse sent them into the water.
Colonel Roland Butler of the Maryland State Police reported finding two men dead in a red pickup truck under 25 feet of water in a collapsed bridge area. Recovery efforts were halted due to rising danger in the harbor. Sonar images revealed additional vehicles trapped under the debris, complicating the rescue efforts.
The two men found dead on Wednesday were identified as Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, 26, from Guatemala, living in Dundalk, and Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, from Mexico, living in Baltimore. Four other road workers who were fixing potholes on a bridge are missing and presumed dead. They were immigrants from El Salvador and Honduras.
On Tuesday, two workers were rescued from water near the nation's busiest port, with one hospitalized. This port, which handles items like coal and vehicles, is crucial for the economy, supporting 8,000 jobs and generating $2 million in daily wages. Despite concerns, experts don't foresee major impacts on commodity prices or supply chains, as other East Coast ports can absorb the capacity. The incident also led to significant traffic jams in Baltimore, happening around 1:30 a.m..
