AT&T resets 7.6 million customers' passcodes after hacked user data was discovered on the dark web, potentially including personal information.
The massive telecom company AT&T revealed on Saturday that it has reset 7.6 million customers' passcodes after discovering that hacked user data had been made available on the dark web. The information may have included a person's entire name, email address, mailing address, phone number, Social Security number, date of birth, AT&T account number, and passcode, according to the company, which added that details varied depending on the client and account. Apart from the aforementioned 7.6 million clients, 65.4 million previous account holders were also impacted. The business has announced plans to provide one-on-one assistance to individuals with compromised personal information and offer free identity theft and credit monitoring services.
According to AT&T, it reset the passcodes for individuals who were impacted and sent users to a website with instructions on how to do the same. It added that it was launching a thorough investigation with the assistance of both internal and external cybersecurity specialists. AT&T, a major telecom company, has denied any involvement in a data breach that has been detected for a prolonged period, stating that it is not certain if the stolen data was from AT&T or a vendor and has no proof of illegal access. AT&T experienced a nationwide outage on February 22, affecting subscribers in cities like Atlanta, Los Angeles, and New York, causing temporary connection disruptions for hours across the country.
