Apple has a reputation for being one of the most secure phones but a new report from Kaspersky has revealed that cybercriminals are targeting Mac users at an alarming rate.
A Kaspersky report on Mac users shed light on a substantial increase in the attacks during the first six months of 2019. Over this time period, the phishing attacks disguised using the Apple brand grew to more than 1.6 million. In 2015, there were just 852,293 such attacks.
“The owners of MacBooks and iMacs are only rivaled by Linux users in terms of the level of confidence in their own security, and we must admit that they are right to a certain degree: Compared to Windows-based systems, there are far fewer threats that target macOS,” said Kaspersky researchers Mikhail Kuzin.
However, the experts also noted that the security landscape is shifting and it is not in favor of Apple especially because of the growing number of its systems.
According to reports from Kaspersky, 12% of the attacks targeted corporate users and the attack is not contained to the US, but also extends to several other countries like Brazil, France, and India. The attackers use Apple branding to attack users, meaning that the attackers send emails claiming to be from technical support and request you to visit a link and compromise the security of your system once you visit.
