Walmart may be thinking about its own cloud gaming service

Google recently announced its cloud gaming service Stadia and now reports suggest that Walmart may also be exploring the gaming front. First reported by the popular USgamer, Walmart is planning its own gaming platform.

The gaming news portal has had multiple sources familiar with the retail giant’s plans confirm this news. Although not much was revealed by these sources apart from the fact that Walmart is planning its own streaming service for video games. According to this report, Walmart has been in talks with developers and publishers behind the scenes throughout this year’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) that was held in San Francisco.

Some may feel that the retail giant may be venturing far from its designated retail space; the company has been going through a major tech makeover in recent years. Walmart has successfully integrated its physical stores with its large online presence in recent years and has picked up the pace at which it offers deliveries, app integrations and pick up services. Given the resources at its disposal, gaming could be an attractive proposition for the company to diversify its services.

Also, Walmart has a widely known technology division which is called Walmart Labs which employs around 6,000 people and develops the technology for Walmart. With such a specialized force in its hands, cloud gaming service could be a big way in which the company can modernize and explore new frontiers.
