Beware of the BadRabbit Ransomware

A new kind of malware has surfaced causing cyber threats and attacks. It’s called the BadRabbit Ransomware and is spreading across Europe, mainly through Russia, Ukraine, and other Eastern European countries. Currently, the prime targets have been Kiev Metro, Ukraine’s Odessa International Airport, several Russian media outlets, corporate networks, and other important computer networks.

The BadRabbit requires a potential victim to download and execute a bogus Adobe Flash installer file and therefore infecting themselves. An early vaccine against the malware has been developed by researchers themselves.

Ties with NotPetya or ExPetr

Researchers from Kaspersky and ESET are working and keeping watch. Researchers from both these organizations have said that the BadRabbit has ties with Petya, the Ransomware attack that spread worldwide earlier this summer. It was found that both Petya and BadRabbit appeared on same hacked websites, dozens in number.

Kaspersky said in a blog post, “Our researchers have detected a number of compromised websites, all news or media sites. Our researchers have detected a number of compromised websites, all news or media sites.”

Interestingly, the creator of the Ransomware appears to be a Game of Throne fan. There have been references to Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons and Grey Worm, a beloved character who is definitely not the skin disease known as greyscale. Security has been spiked up all over the world as well.
