Leica’s upcoming flagship S3 is unbelievably awesome medium format DSLR. The Leica S3 DSLR, unveiled recently at Photokina 2018, has a massive 64-megapixel medium-format sensor and 4K video capability. The beautiful-feeling Leica S3 camera will start shipping from spring of 2019.
Leica S3 joins the troop of cameras like a few Hasselblad models and Fujifilm’s GFX-100 to offer high-resolution photography. The camera body is a magnesium alloy frame bound by a matching black rubber that’s effortless to grip.
The 64-megapixel proFormat sensor delivers “impeccable performance in any lighting situation,” Leica says. However, the sensor has no low-pass filter (LPF) to maximize sharpness resulting in some smooth and uneven edges, especially in video. The camera also has USB 3.0 and Wi-Fi, but not Bluetooth.
Leica S3, unlike its predecessors, has dials and buttons that are customizable and multifunctional. The 3-inch, 921,600 dot model rear display is surrounded by four large multifunctional keypads that will respond to a long press as well as a regular one. Similarly, the control dial too can be long pressed to switch between different shooting modes.
Other features include a “large and bright" viewfinder, “fast and reliable” autofocus, a 3 fps continuous shooting speed, 4k video recording using the entire sensor, and more. Leica is yet to reveal more on the photography device it claims to have “an array of cutting-edge technical advancements”. And to conclude, S3 will be Leica’s most expensive standard camera that will supposedly hold a price value above $20,000.
