APG-Neuros - High-Speed Turbo Blowers & Aeration Systems

Turbo blower technology has its roots in the aviation and aerospace industry. This technology relies on an airfoil bearing supported on a shaft that is directly integrated with the variable frequency drive, motor, and control system in a single enclosure.

APG-Neuros is a company that produces turbo blower-based products. It was founded in the aerospace and defense industry where Aero Engines were used for over ten years in Gas Turbine Engines for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and in the F-16 military aviation program, making these advanced technologies demonstrated, tested, and reliable.

Introduction

APG-Neuros was founded back in 2005 to take the turbo technologies into other industrial sectors. It chose the environmental sector as it identified wastewater treatment as its primary target market to address. The aeration technology used in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment had suffered for generations the pain of liquidated quality and talents departure.

All that remained were low-cost and inefficient products combined with old-fashioned ways of doing business.

APG-Neuros identified that these pains represent a great opportunity that can be addressed by a newcomer with innovative technologies and leadership qualities, that if persisted, can lead to transformation and grow a good business. The company is known for technology developments and is recognized as the force behind the successful introduction of the high-efficiency turbo blower technology to the water and wastewater treatment market in North America and Europe, modernizing and bringing a much-needed change to the existing aging industry. APG-Neuros turbo blowers succeeded in operation in a variety of industrial applications and wastewater treatment processes.

Fifteen years later, APG-Neuros continues to lead the industry by continually driving and propelling innovation forward through the most technologically advanced products and aeration solutions to achieve maximum energy efficiency and operational flexibility for their customers.

Use of Turbo Blowers in industries

APG-Neuros offers electric high-speed turbo blowers and biogas, or natural gas-fueled alternatives (gas turbine) with a power range from 30hp to 3000hp. Their electrical product is demonstrated to offer over 35% energy savings compared to old technology solutions. Their gas turbine product increases operating cost savings to up to 60%. They also provide artificial intelligence-based control systems that use historical data to predict the lowest air and power required for treating wastewater.

High-speed blowers are also used in the air supply system. The blowers are the first stage in a diffused air system. Adequate blower system design is required for efficient control of the DO concentration. Historically, inlet vanes or outlet dampers have been used to meet a varying demand but not in an energy-efficient manner. Today, High-speed Turbo blowers supplied with variable frequency drives (VFD) allow turndown of the aeration capacity. Apart from blower capacity control, blower control also includes start-stop procedures for multiple blowers and safety procedures during start-stop and surge control which prevents instability at low flows by maintaining a minimum flow.

APG-Neuros’ unique selling point

APG-Neuros is popular as they offer the widest range of High-Speed Turbo Blowers with the best in industry efficiency for wastewater treatment. It produces non-contact air Bearing and magnetic bearing 30HP to 3000HP Single and Multiple Core models. Some of the major highlights include:

  • Higher efficiency over other technologies
  • Up to 35% over traditional blowers and up to 11% over other turbo blowers
  • Low maintenance and condition-based maintenance – no scheduled periods
  • Filter changes are only routine maintenance action
  • Environmental friendly
  • No oils to change or dispose
  • Quiet operation below 80 dBa
  • No heat rejection into blower room
  • Easy installation. Plug and Play, small footprint
  • Indoor and outdoor installation
  • Smart Connect for remote monitoring
  • Gas turbine model, new innovation that uses natural gas over electricity to power the plant
  • 1MW model, an extremely powerful new innovation using up to 3000HP created for larger wastewater treatment plants

Benefits of aeration control in wastewater treatment plants

Blowers are the largest single user of energy at treatment plants representing up to 70% of the facility’s energy consumption. As a result, appropriate aeration control through the use of a centralized blower and instrumentation control panel, commonly referred to as a Master Control Panel (MCP), has been the common focus to ensure the most efficient and effective control strategies are applied.

Aeration is important for providing sufficient DO for aerobic organisms performing BOD removal and nitrification in activated sludge plants and keeping the biomass in suspension. The nitrification capacity can be varied in relation to DO control in two ways: by adjusting the aeration intensity or by adjusting the aerated volume. Apart from DO concentration, several other factors have been reported to affect nitrification rates, including inorganic substrates, solids retention time (SRT), temperature, pH, and toxic inhibition.

Efforts towards energy savings

For a company, caring for the environment is as necessary as making profits and expanding. APG-Neuros is dedicated to environmental protection. They are proud of their low energy and operation costs. From replacing old technology blower systems, APG-Neuros’ Turbo Blower fleet (1500 Turbo Blowers in 500 water treatment plants) has a enabled their customers to cumulatively save 3,5 Billion kWh of power from their founding in 2005 to date which is the equivalent of the total power consumption of 319,635 homes for one year.

This energy saving translates to a Carbon Footprint (GHG CO2 Emissions) reduction of 2,470,871 Metric Tons of GHG CO2 which is the equivalent of removing 537,000 cars from the streets for one year. The total monetary values of APG-Neuros cumulative power savings to date are estimated at over 400 million dollars USD, which the company has saved over the past 15 years of operations.
