PPi Technologies Group Global technology for packaging

The industrial revolution has undoubtedly been a boon for the world. The supply chain and availability of products wouldn’t have been easy with it. But, with that comes the challenge of waste products. In turn, this is responsible for the pollution of the earth with non-biodegradable waste. Global pollution has become a severe concern for companies around the world now. But very few companies are environmental-friendly. One such company is PPi Technologies Group. The company was formed to sell machinery that manufactures pouches with slider and press-to-close zippers from printed laminated roll stock films and also offers prefabricated pouches with spout fitments. A first when introduced into the North American market!

Plastic Pouch Challenges:

There is a huge public and government pressure on plastic pouches. And it is essential what companies do with them after use. Recycling is crucial as it will not degrade easily. The Glass containers are bulky too and not economical to use. PPi Technologies believes it’s economical to use pouches instead of glass bottles or containers. Today with the new circular syngasification program developed in Florida, they are Founder members of the consortium. All waste is incinerated and, at a certain point, will produce a plastic raw material to make plastics again. So, no landfills, and most importantly, they can use the correct plastic material specification to protect the product during its shelf life. Looking ahead, no landfills, little ocean waste as used plastic becomes a valuable energy asset.

A second solution with COVID-19 and the need not to touch products, the use of single-use plastic pouches like stick packs and VialPaQ™s is increasing. The customer opens it, uses it, and disposes off it in the waste bin.

Looking back at their first technologies:

PPi Technologies has built Laudenberg/SN pouch machinery that was all stainless steel (no painting) and reduced air consumption to keep the atmosphere clean. They have developed and patented triple and Quadro pouch form-fill-seal machinery with one operator. They examine all products available in the marketplace and developed StandUp pouch machines for water and alcohol packages. The next challenges were to make pouches with nitrogen gas flush and a patent for a reclosable zipper that had a piece cut out to keep the gas in and increase shelf life from dairy to customer home. Today, they are making pouches with spouts to replace glass bottles for all products.

The motivation behind new sealing and packaging:

The StandUp pouch market started in 1960 with a simple beverage pouch. Then a straw hole was added and then a spout. All the time, the materials used became lighter and more user friendly. Materials remained basically the same. PPi Technologies recognized that replacing bottles and boxes would give them a huge market advantage.

Sealing Technologies

The market demand for more and more recycled, single source, sustainable materials for StandUp pouches have led to new technologies. These include very controlled sealing specifications, ultrasonic seals, and thermal as back up and this has required a complete overhaul of heat-sealing technology. PPi Technologies started to work with new companies out of the box and are ready with solutions that work.

Machine Safety and Operator Security

All machines have at least one operator, and thus all points of injury risks need to be taken care of. None of the machines run without a safety startup. Next, the production speed is instantly stopped if any door on the machine is open. This requires a supervisor startup. PPi Technologies also offer a patented system whereby all stoppages can be emailed to all addresses given to the system.

They also provide videos of the machine running and how to start up. Same time all safety items are in the machine-human interface computer screen. They also deliver by FedEx all the operator manuals for customer signature to be used for operator.

Ensuring their new sealing technology works

The company relies heavily on film material manufacturers for the sealing of their sustainable films at speed. This new seal technology is well patented. Production tests are carried out, and different temperatures are tested to get an operating range.

They cannot offer something that fails and harms the customer pouch.

AI and the future

There is no doubt AI has an important spot in pouch machinery. First is recording specifications and, where possible, adjusting without stopping the machine when these differ during production and, if necessary, shutting the machine down. AI can also be used by an operator to ask questions and get solutions. They have a patented system called ControlSmart™ that measures operating conditions on a production run, sending warning emails, and stopping the machine. It even records if the machine was washed down before production. The AI talks to the scale, the VideoJet, the cartoner, and palletizer if needed. AI will run machines within ten years.

Murray has 125 technology patents issued and several more patents pending.
