Microsoft aims to safeguard healthcare access for 60 million Americans by providing enterprise-quality cybersecurity solutions to vulnerable rural hospitals
Microsoft Corp. has unveiled a new cybersecurity initiative targeting hospitals serving over 60 million rural Americans. This move comes in response to a dramatic rise in ransomware attacks on the healthcare sector, which saw a 130% increase in 2023, making it the most attacked critical infrastructure sector.
The Microsoft Cybersecurity Program for Rural Hospitals is tailored to address the unique security needs of rural healthcare facilities, which often lack the resources to combat sophisticated cyber threats. These attacks pose a significant risk to patient care and hospital operations, especially in smaller, independent Critical Access and Rural Emergency hospitals that are frequently the only healthcare providers for many miles.
According to the National Rural Health Association, rural health clinics are prime targets for cyberattacks. Microsoft’s new program aims to deliver free and low-cost technology services, training, and support to these institutions, enhancing their cybersecurity defenses.
This cybersecurity program is part of Microsoft’s broader efforts to support rural healthcare. Through its AI for Health program, Microsoft collaborates with nonprofits, researchers, and organizations to advance telemedicine and improve clinical decision-making. Additionally, initiatives like the Cybersecurity Skills Initiative and TechSpark aim to boost technology and cybersecurity job creation in rural areas, while the Airband initiative focuses on expanding high-speed internet access.
