Oracle and AT&T ink 'Historic' Agreement

It is raining agreements for Oracle as the cloud services company entered into 3 agreements on the same day. Oracle has entered into a strategic agreement with Telecom giant AT&T. Under this agreement AT&T will move all its large scale internal databases to Oracle's cloud allowing better flexibility and cheaper IT costs. It also entered into agreements with VM Ware and Equinix on the same day.

This allows AT&T global access to Oracle's cloud portfolio on the public cloud as well as AT&T's own integrated cloud. The agreement includes Oracle's services like Infrastructure as a service (IaaS), Platform as a service (PaaS), Software as a service (SaaS) and also Database as a service (DBaaS) which will help AT&T increase productivity, decrease IT costs and also allow them better flexibility in implementing its own SaaS applications globally.

AT&T has more than 70,000 on field technicians and this will help it manage that resource efficiently increasing their job duration accuracy and on time arrival for the job by combining its existing machine learning and big data capabilities with Oracle's cloud technology. It is one of the existing problems at AT&T as its technicians have a window of 2 hours a job, which could mean all the difference in the world for a big company.

“We believe that the future of the network is to be data-powered, to be software-centric, and to be fast and responsive,” said John Donovan, chief strategy officer and group president of AT&T Technology and Operations. “We call this three-pronged approach AT&T Network 3.0 Indigo, and it’s all about enabling a seamless and intuitive network experience for our customers. This collaboration with Oracle accelerates our network transformation and migration to the cloud to expand efficiency, performance, and reduce cost while improving overall customer service.”

AT&T has been a global leader in virtualizing and software controlling the wide area network. It aims to virtualize 55% of its core networking capabilities by the end of this year and has set an ambitious goal of virtualizing 75 % of it by 2020.

“This is an historic agreement,” said Mark Hurd, CEO, Oracle. “The Oracle Cloud will enable AT&T to use Oracle technology more efficiently across every layer of the technology stack. This includes AT&T’s massive redeployment of Oracle Databases, which will be provisioned entirely from the Oracle Cloud Platform including our highly cost effective Exadata as a Service.”

This deal is a win for Oracle also as it helps them increase its influence in the cloud market and also bring in a considerable amount of revenue. The AT&T agreement builds on the strong momentum that has made Oracle the world’s fastest growing large-scale cloud computing company.
