According to a Fortune report, Jeff Bezos sold 12 million shares of Amazon.com Inc. this week, marking the first time the billionaire has done so since 2021. A document stated that the sales brought in just over $2 billion.
Amazon revealed on February 2 that Bezos intends to sell up to 50 million Amazon shares in the upcoming year. With that sum, Bezos capitalizes on a recent stock market boom that has elevated him to the status of the world's richest person. As of Friday, he had $199.5 billion, based on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
Since 2002, Bezos has sold shares for approximately $30 billion, with over $20 billion of those sales occurring in 2020 and 2021 combined. In November, he gave stock shares to nonprofit organizations valued at over $230 million, demonstrating his generosity. On this week's stock sales, Amazon has not released a statement.
Bezos disclosed the proposed sale of 50 million Amazon shares, which have an estimated market value of $8.4 billion, in a separate SEC filing that was made around February 7.
In order to devote more attention to his other endeavors, such as his philanthropic work and the rocket business Blue Origin, Bezos resigned as CEO of Amazon in 2021.
