Recently tech giant Microsoft had acquired ReFirm Labs for an undisclosed amount. ReFirm specializes in firmware security which explains the acquisition as the tech giant is keen on strengthening its firmware security and analysis capabilities. ReFirm was created by a group of IoT experts led by Terry Dunlap and Peter Eacmen in 2017. The group had created a new method that will automate the process of finding security flaws in connected devices. Centrifuge Platform by ReFirm is the first solution in the market to deliver this capability on a commercial scale.
The latest acquisition will bring together the expertise of ReFirm with Microsoft’s capabilities to enhance the solution’s ability to analyze and secure the firmware backed by the speed and power of the cloud. Many companies use solutions of ReFirm globally to check firmware end-to-end and look out for vulnerabilities. So far, ReFirm has managed to raise $3.5 million through various round and venture capital firms like DataTribe and Dominion Angels. Along with its core solutions, ReFirm has also launched an analytics tool called Binwalk. The new efforts for security revamp are due to the security breach that happened last month at Colonial Pipeline. With work from home becoming the new norm, the latest acquisition is certainly helpful for the tech giant.
