Facebook aims to become a Metaverse company

The social media giant Facebook has very ambitious plans of transforming itself from a social media company to a Metaverse company — a collective virtual shared space, created by the sum of all virtual worlds, augmented reality, and the internet. The Metaverse is a vision that spans many apps or even companies. You can think about it as the successor to the current day mobile internet.

On one hand, the US Congress is working on a bill that would break up Facebook, potentially forcing it to spin out Instagram and WhatsApp and limiting acquisitions. While on the other hand, Mark Zukerberg has a high ambition to achieve something genuinely ubiquitous: the Metaverse.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told his employees, the company’s divisions focus on products for communities, creators, commerce, and virtual reality would increasingly become relevant to realize this vision. “What I think is most interesting is how these themes will come together into a bigger idea. Our overarching goal across all of these initiatives is to help bring the Metaverse to life,” said Zukerberg.

He further described that the Metaverse would bring great opportunities to individual creators and artists; to individuals working from far away places; and to people who live in places where opportunities for education or recreation are minimal. A Metaverse could bring the next big change in the internet and making virtual reality a more common thing in the coming few years.
