Google to update its Privacy Policy regarding Voice Data leaks

Earlier a report from the Belgian public broadcaster VRT NWS revealed that more than 1,000 sound recordings of customer conversations with the Google Assistant were leaked by some of the Google contractors.

In response, Google said, “We just learned that one of these language reviewers has violated our data security policies by leaking confidential Dutch audio data. Our Security and Privacy Response teams have been activated on this issue, are investigating and we will take action. We are conducting a full review of our safeguards in this space to prevent misconduct like this from happening again.”

It has also added that providing the recordings and conversations was a violation of the company data security policies. The company is currently leading an investigation to catch the culprit(s) who have leaked the information and is poised to take necessary actions immediately. Google also promises to update its Privacy Policies regarding Voice Data Leaks.

Google has also shared a way to opt-out in their blog post about how to secure the stored data. “You can turn off storing audio data to your Google account completely, or choose to auto-delete data after every 3 months or 18 months. We’re always working to improve how we explain our settings and privacy practices to people, and will be reviewing opportunities to further clarify how data is used to improve speech technology,” the post says.
