Flipboard resets passwords of millions of users post hacking

The news aggregator and social network aggregation company Flipboard has reported that it was hit by security incidents multiple times last year and this year. The hacking saw malicious actors’ access databases containing Flipboard’s user information.

Flipboard reported that these cybersecurity incidents happened between June 2, 2018 and March 23, 2019 and again on April 21-22, 2019. Apart from unauthorized access, Flipboard believes that hackers also “potentially obtained” copies of certain databases containing the user information. Among the information that was compromised were some of the users’ account information like name, Flipboard username, cryptographically protected password, and email address.

Although the passwords were cryptographically protected not all users’ account information was involved. Flipboard has reset all users’ passwords as a precaution. Users can continue to use Flipboard accounts through the devices they are already logged in from. But if they choose to access their account from a new device or after having logged out; users will be asked to create a new password to proceed.

The company on its website wrote: “We deeply regret this incident happened.” The company has asked its users to contact them through Help Center.
